Hyundai will reportedly unveil a two-door coupe version of its all-new Elantra at this year's LA Auto Show, aimed squarely at the US-market Honda Civic Coupe.

Reports of a two-door Elantra have been circulating for some time now, with Hyundai dealers in the US understood to have been told of its coming earlier this year.

A 2011 New York Auto Show debut was expected, but a November unveiling in Los Angeles is now on the cards according to US publication Inside Line.

Technical details remain unclear at this early stage, although the coupe will likely be an exercise in style rather than performance.

Engine options could include the sedan's 1.6 litre Gamma GDI engine, producing 102kW and 166Nm of torque, or the US-market 110kW 1.8 litre Nu engine.

Like the rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe, a racier R version could also feature in the Elantra Coupe's line-up, powered by  a turbocharged 155kW version of the 1.6 litre engine.

Australia

Could we see the Elantra Coupe in Australia? Apart from the Kia Koup, a two-door Elantra would have few direct competitors - but with the dedicated Veloster sports car set to debut here next year, a local launch for the Elantra Coupe may be unlikely.
