Hyundai has confirmed this week that its recently revealed 1.6 litre turbo engine will debut in the Veloster sports hatch in 2012.

While the regular Veloster is scheduled to make its Australian debut early next year, the Korean carmaker's local arm says it is still working on dates for the turbocharged version.

Based on the 1.6 litre unit driving the regular Veloster - along with the Accent and the Kia Rio - the more powerful 1.6 T-GDI engine benefits from a twin-scroll turbocharger, air-to-air intercooler, direct injection and variable valve timing to produce 152kW and 265Nm.

The turbocharged Veloster will make its global debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, where the facelifted Genesis Coupe is also expected to appear.

The turbo Velostar will certainly have some sitting up and taking notice: if it has the handling to match the turbo's output, it could be a game-changer for Hyundai in terms of buyer-perception of the brand.
