Hyundai has expanded its European-sourced ix35 SE (Special Edition) range with the addition of a diesel option, priced at $34,990 (plus on-roads).

The arrival of the new diesel SE follows the Australian debut in January of the petrol-powered SE, sourced from Hyundai's plant in the Czech Republic.

As it does in other diesel ix35 variants, the 2.0 litre R-Series CRDi engine produces 135kW @ 4000rpm and 392Nm between 1800-2500rpm.

Matched with Hyundai's all-wheel-drive system and a six-speed automatic transmission, the ix35 SE lists fuel consumption at 7.5 l/100km.

Special Edition models are equipped with a Europe-specific front bumper design, along with in-set fog lamps, projector headlamps with dusk sensors, power folding side mirrors, solar control glass with rear privacy tint and 17-inch alloy wheels.

In the cabin, buyers will find a chilled glove box, front and rear heated seats, along with leather/"leatherette" trim to the seats, steering wheel and gear shift knob.

Other features include a five-inch touchscreen display with integrated Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free calling, auxiliary/USB inputs and iPod compatibility, and six speakers.

Standard safety features of the ix35 SE include six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Downhill Brake Control (DBC), Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM).
