Hyundai has unveiled its Brazilian market-only HB20 to tackle the hotly-contested small car market there.

Designed for the unique needs of Brazilian customers, the five-door HB20 - Hyundai Brazil 20 - will be built in the carmaker's new Priacicaba plant.

"For Hyundai, the launch of HB20 means a lot more than simply presenting a new model," Chang Kyun Han, President of Hyundai Motors Brazil said.

"Unlike our other models currently offered in Brazil, HB20 is the first model strategically developed and produced exclusively for the Brazilian market."

Based on the i20, the HB20 is available with two flex-fuel engines to cope with Brazil's very-high ethanol fuel.

The first is a 1.0 litre engine good for 60kW, the second a 1.6 litre with 95kW of power.

Both are mated to a five-speed manual, while the 1.6 can also be had with a four-speed automatic transmission.

"This new car is optimised to the taste of Brazilian consumers and the driving conditions in this country, with years of dedication from our engineers," Kyun Han said.

Production starts next week and the first customers will drive away during October.
