Talk of the new R model comes from US industry paper Automotive News, which claims that Peugeot boss Maxime Picat has confirmed the new flagship.
"Above the 208 GTI, we will soon have an even sportier 208 R," Picat told the paper in an interview this week.
Reports earlier this year pointed to a new 'special edition' of the 208 GTi, boosting the 1.6 turbo engine's output to nearly 177kW.
Those numbers would make it a clear power leader in the light hot-hatch market.
Watch for more on these reports to surface over the coming year.
