The sports car renaissance continues at Honda, with a successor to the screaming S2000 scheduled to arrive in 2018.
Patent renderings from earlier in the year show the styling direction of the new car, which adopts the low and angular direction set by Honda’s other mid-engine stars.
Unlike the first generation S2000, the new car is expected to make the move from roadster to coupe, but a glance at the patent documents show that the styling could lend itself to a relatively simple chop-top treatment down the track if Honda deems it necessary.
Initially believed to run a higher-output version of the Civic Type R’s 228kW 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder, ever-stricter emissions regulations have forced the switch to a version of the new 1.5 litre Earth Dreams engine from the new Civic sedan.
Honda still hasn't released power figures for the Civic's 1.5 litre turbochared four-cylinder engine, but estimates of up to 150kW have been suggested. That figure will likely bumped up for use in the mid-engine coupe.
Any shortfall from the petrol engine will be made up by a hybrid electric boost, which should see the powertrain lay down a combined output of around 225kW.
Honda will also be able to use its re-entry as an engine supplier to Formula 1 to market the new car’s drivetrain technology.
An article by UK publication Auto Express indicates a target price of £50,000, or close to AU$108,000, a fair step above the last generation S2000 which was priced at $73,590 in its last year in sale in Australia in 2009.
