If you’d hoped that Honda’s 2015 Concept D SUV concept was nothing more than a bad memory, we’ve got bad news for you - the Honda UR-V is on its way, taking its styling cues from last year’s Shanghai Auto Show concept.

Australian customers will most like be spared however, with the large SUV arriving as a flagship model for the Chinese market, and its expanding appetite for SUVs.

At the Concept D’s unveiling, Honda described the fastback SUV as glimpse of a future production model.

Honda has since registered the UR-V name in China and will apply it to a more production-friendly version of the Concept D, giving the oversized wheels and gold-plated grille the flick along the way.

To be built with Honda’s joint-venture partner, Dongfeng Motor Company (who also builds cars for Kia, Nissan, and Citroen amongst others), the upmarket UR-V will likely be offered with a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic.

Expected to be based off the same platform as the MDX, from Honda’s American luxury arm Acura, the UR-V will offer more distinctive styling, as well as emphasising the more capacious rear seat - a priority for Chinese buyers.

The UR-V will most likely be revealed at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show at the end of April, before going on sale at the end of the year.
