Honda has released a single teaser shot of a new ‘Urban SUV’ concept, ahead of its unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Following the same style of teaser images used to preview the C and S concepts at Beijing earlier this year, this image looks to hint at a new sub-CR-V compact SUV from the Japanese carmaker.

While we’ll have to wait until the Detroit unveiling for specific details, Honda describes the concept as “a global concept model combining a sporty and dynamic SUV profile with a spacious, functional interior."

Where will this SUV slot into the Honda line-up? A new Jazz-based SUV has been confirmed for a 2014 debut, rivalling the likes of Nissan’s Juke, upcoming Ford EcoSport and Holden Trax.

If reports this week prove accurate, it would also count a pint-sized Mazda CX-3 crossover among its rivals.

Such a model would not be Honda’s first compact SUV foray, with the seemingly ahead-of-its-time but slow selling HR-V model sold locally between 1999-2001.

Keep an eye on TMR for further details after the concept’s January 15th unveiling.
