Honda has announced that the newest variant in its Odyssey people-mover range will be launched next month, but Japan will be the only market to see it (for now).

The new model is the Odyssey Hybrid - revealed last year and powered by Honda’s “Sport Hybrid I-MMD” (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) system which makes its first appearance in the Odyssey range.

Honda says the I-MMD system provides “outstanding environmental performance and the powerful acceleration of an electric motor”.

The all-important fuel figure for the Odyssey Hybrid is 3.8 l/100km, which Honda claims is 'best-in-class' for a seven- or eight-seater 2.0 litre vehicle excluding plug-in hybrids.

Honda also claims its new model won’t be compromised by the hybrid hardware, with the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) comprising the battery and PCU (Power Control Unit) located under the front seats to save space.

The carmaker is yet to attach a price to its new variant, but the upmarket interior may point to the hybrid model being positioned near the top of the range.

Honda is also keeping mum on some of the Odyssey’s other specifications, so expect more to be revealed next month.

As mentioned, Japan is the only market guaranteed to see the Honda Odyssey Hybrid at this stage.
