Honda has announced that its all-new tenth-generation Civic will go on sale in Europe with a 1.0 litre turbocharged inline three, the smallest motor ever fitted to the Japanese company's volume-selling small car.

Equipped with Honda's VTEC variable cam timing and lift system, direct injection and a low-inertia turbocharger, Honda says the new 1.0 will achieve "class-leading output and environmental performance.

Raw numbers are still under wraps, but information released by Honda in 2013 indicates the tiny 1.0 litre could make as much as 95kW and 200Nm - moderate power for a small hatch, but healthy torque.
