The D, which likely stands for ‘D-segment’ or ‘large car’, is not a next-generation MDX - the current model only launched in 2014 - but rather a new flagship model for the Chinese market.
Details of the new concept have not been revealed, although Honda confirms today’s unveiling is the first glimpse of a coming mass-production model.
The carmaker promises “high-quality driving and a spacious cabin”, but specific features and dimensions have yet to be detailed.
The coming new SUV may be built on the same architecture that underpins the big new MDX offered through the luxury Acura brand in the US.
The new MDX rides on a 2819mm wheelbase, which is nearly 120mm longer than the base of the first-gen MDX that was offered in Australia between 2003 and 2007.
The wheelbase of the latest MDX is also around 40mm longer than that of Toyota’s huge new Kluger, making its platform an ideal candidate for a spacious SUV in the rear legroom-obsessed Chinese market.
As for its styling, we can likely expect the Concept D’s huge front intakes, rear vents and broad wheel arches to be toned down in its move to production.
The new SUV may otherwise remain unchanged, with much of its styling - including the familiar new ‘Flying H’ grille design and long tail lamps - ready for a showroom debut.
Don't expect to see either offering in Australia: this new SUV is for China only, and the new Honda/Acura MDX is built exclusively in left-hand-drive.
