The first of Honda’s anticipated Civic Type Rs have rolled off its UK production line, with the Japanese carmaker exclaiming “they R here!”.

Three units have been paraded for onlookers surrounded by staff at Honda’s Swindon facility, with one each in red, white and blue to symbolise Great Britain.

Earlier this year, Honda announced the UK plant would be the “global production hub” for the Type R. The Swindon facility is quite accustomed to building Civics, having bolted them together for more than 20 years.

“The new Civic Type R is an imperative model for Honda, representing our racing spirit and demonstrating our commitment to innovation and passion,” Honda’s Soichiro Takizawa said.

“[The Swindon plant is] extremely proud to be the only manufacturer of the Civic Type R in the world. Our high standards have earned us this privilege and this is testament to the continued commitment of our associates.”

Buyers of the first and subsequent examples of the Civic Type R can expect 228kW and 400Nm under their right foot, thanks to Honda’s all-new 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (see video, below).

Power reaches the road through the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, and the Type R can hit 100km/h from rest in 5.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 270km/h.

Honda claims there’s no faster FWD hatch on the market - a claim that was reinforced when the Type R set a new record for FWD vehicles at Germany’s Nurburgring.

And that record may stand forevermore, if Nurburgring authorities decide to continue indefinitely with newly-enforced speed limits at the circuit (a review is planned for the end of the year).

European sales of the new Type R are expected to begin shortly, but Australian customer could be waiting until late 2016 or early 2017 before the new model appears in local showrooms.

Honda Australia will instead concentrate on the new NSX supercar in the interim, which is expected to arrive before the end of next year.
