Honda Civic Type R Mugen 2.2 Revealed For European Market

Honda's brand-new 2012 Civic Hatch is just around the corner, which means it's time for one last special-edition performer: the Civic Type R Mugen 2.2.

Honda's brand-new 2012 Civic Hatch is just around the corner, which means it's time for one last special-edition performer: the Civic Type R Mugen 2.2.

Developed by Honda's UK arm and Mugen Euro, the Civic Type R Mugen 2.2 has had its bore and stroke increased, boosting power to 195kW - a 30 percent boost over the regular CTR. Peak torque is listed at 240Nm, up from 193Nm.

"Environmental pressures mean naturally aspirated engines are rapidly being superseded by other engine architectures and technologies," Mugen Euro president Hiro Toyota said.

"We may never see the like of the K20 in a mainstream production car again, so felt it only fitting we mark the occasion with this special 2.2 version of the Honda Civic Type R."

The new car also represents a small leap over the European-market 20-car Mugen 2.0 variant, which produces 180kW.

Oddly enough, four of the 20 Mugen 2.0 CTRs remain unsold, and may gain the new engine as a result (or a lower price).

How many of the bigger-engined CTR Mugen 2.2 cars will go into production is unclear, with Honda still finalising numbers and pricing.

As with the Mugen 2.0, don't expect to see this one in Australian showrooms.
