Holden has confirmed a new partnership with charging infrastructure company Better Place, marking a key step in the launch of its upcoming $59,990 Volt electric vehicle.

The deal means that while the first charging station at its Port Melbourne headquarters was installed by ChargePoint, new Volt buyers will be offered a number of Better Place options.

Better Place and Holden are currently developing membership packages for Volt buyers, including the option of a specialised fast-charge unit at home or work, and green-energy subscription options.

The company says that its government-certified zero-emissions renewable energy packages use wind, solar and hydro technologies.

Holden Energy and Environment Director, Richard Marshall said offering customers faster charging and renewable energy solutions were important steps.

“The Volt is unique among electric cars as it can charge from a regular household outlet, but we know from overseas experience that Volt customers are likely to also look for faster charging options," Marshall said.

He added that while the Volt's range-extending petrol engine allows owners to go further between charges, "we do expect that drivers will prefer to drive on battery only wherever possible".

Holden says that the Volt's lithium-ion battery pack can change in less than six hours through a 240V 10A household outlet, while installing a Better Place charging unit will bring the time to under four hours.

Marshall expects the option to be popular with fleet buyers looking to run the Volt predominantly on the initial battery charge, without using the backup option of the petrol engine.

Better Place's Ben Keneally said the membership packages will also offer customers ongoing management and maintenance of the charge point, along with 24-hour customer care.


About the Volt

The Volt is driven primarily by a 111kW/368Nm front-mounted electric motor, paired with a small 1.4 litre petrol engine, the latter powering a generator that keeps the electric motor's lithium-ion battery pack charged.
