Holden Malibu Teased Ahead Of 2012 Launch

Holden has released a teaser image today of its new player in the mid-size sedan market, which will be based on the US-market Chevrolet Malibu.

The image follows a series of patent drawings obtained last October, revealing strong lines and styling that places the Malibu comfortably between the Cruze small car and the larger Commodore.

Replacing the ailing Epica (never a top performer and well behind the likes of the Mondeo, Liberty and i45 in sales), the new model will also wear the Malibu badge when it arrives in Australia, Holden has confirmed today.

“The Malibu will play an important role within the Holden line-up, providing a spacious and efficient four-cylinder alternative for Australian customers,” Holden boss Mike Devereux said.

“Malibu will bridge the gap between our incredibly successful Cruze small car and the best-selling Commodore."

“It will be a standout on the road, with striking styling in the same vein as recent additions to the GM portfolio, including the new-generation Barina and Cruze hatch. Like the Cruze, Malibu will surprise customers with its array of clever technologies and features.”

Neither Holden nor GM have confirmed any technical details for the Malibu, although reports last year suggested a range of naturally-aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines would feature.

The Holden Malibu will make its local sales debut in 2012, but we can look forward to a preview when the Chevrolet-badged version is unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 19. 

The Chevrolet Malibu will also appear at the New York International Auto Show between 23 April and 1 May.

Like many of the Chevrolet-badged models, the Malibu will be a global model for GM, produced in multiple countries including China and the US, and sold in nearly 100 countries over six continents.
