HOLDEN CRUZE WAGON
Holden will add a third bodystyle to its Cruze line-up in 2013. It's not the coupe that fans will have been hoping for, but rather the small wagon that families and fleet buyers will be keen on.
Measuring 4675mm long, the Cruze Wagon comes in at 165mm longer than the recently launched Hatch, and 78mm longer than the Sedan.
In the rear, the Wagon will offer 500 litres of storage space with the back seats in their upright position, growing to 1500 litres when folded flat.
That's a solid increase. In Hatch form, the Cruze offers 413 litres with the seats up, with 1254 litres on offer with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats laid flat.
Mechanical details have not been revealed, although powertrains are likely to carry over unchanged from the Hatch and Sedan models. That includes a 103kW 1.4 litre turbo petrol, a 104kW 1.8 litre petrol and the new 120kW 2.0 litre diesel.
As for styling, expect the front half of the Cruze Wagon to remain identical to its sedan and hatch siblings, while the rear - as shown here - will feature a tapered roofline and a new tail-light design.
When it hits US showrooms this year, and Australia early in 2013, GM will be looking to the Cruze wagon to build on the more than one million Cruze sales racked up since its launch in 2009.
The Cruze has also been a strong seller in the local market, with 33,784 sales in 2011 making it the third most popular small car in Australia, beaten only by the Corolla (36,087) and the country's new best-selling passenger car, the Mazda3 (41,429).
“Cruze has been a fantastic success story for Holden, it’s been extremely well received by our customers making it Australia’s fifth highest-selling car in 2011," Holden's John Elsworth said.
“We’re confident Cruze wagon will take the nameplate from strength to strength and reach new customers who are looking for more versatility.”
With wagon variants not offered in the Mazda3 or Corolla lines, and with the potential for Australian production - and the boost in patriotic sales that can bring - Holden will be looking for a marked sales growth in 2013.
Watch for more details on the Cruze wagon when it hits the Geneva Motor Show next month.
