Holden has confirmed a precautionary recall of 9,547 Australian-built MY12 and MY13 Cruze models, fitted with the company's 1.4 litre petrol engine.

The news follows the recall of Chevrolet Cruze models in the North American market, due to the risk of a fire caused by improper oil changes, which can lead to the collection of oil in the lower air deflector.

After catching in the air deflector - also known as the belly pan - the oil can potentially contact hot engine parts, where a fire could occur.

Holden said in a statement today that the local recall is a precautionary measure only, and that there are currently no reported cases of engine compartment fires in Australia or New Zealand related to this issue.

“We believe Australia’s high standards in servicing procedures significantly reduce the risk of improper oil changes which almost eliminates the risk of a thermal incident,” Holden Director of Warranty, Customer Satisfaction and Quality, Craig Porritt, said.

“However we will always err on the side of caution when it comes to initiating safety recalls and campaigns. Even if there have been no reported cases in our market we will take action to assure our customers and their vehicles are safe.”

Holden is contacting potentially impacted customers directly to arrange a free-of-charge rework which involves the modification of the lower air deflector under the engine. This will take approximately 40 minutes to complete.

If a customer has any questions regarding this safety related recall campaign, they can contact their Holden Dealer or the Holden Recall and Rework Assistance Centre on 1800 632 826.
