Holden's big new Colorado 7 SUV has been revealed in its production Chevrolet guise this week, following its unveiling as a concept at last year's Dubai Motor Show.

Destined for global markets as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the large family SUV will also be the first body-on-frame 4WD SUV in nearly a decade to wear the Holden badge.

Joining the next-generation Colorado pickup - due to hit Australia in the coming months - the Colorado 7 SUV will share the big ute's platform and front-end styling.

“Australians are buying more SUVs than ever before, and we’ve seen this demand reflected in the growing popularity of our Series II Captiva range,” Holden Executive Director for Marketing and Sales, John Elsworth, said.

“The Colorado 7 will be a perfect fit for customers looking for the increased packaging flexibility and lifestyle benefits of clever interior storage, seven seats and rugged off-road performance."

While many of the Colorado 7's details are still to be revealed, Holden has confirmed that buyers can expect a five-link rear suspension arrangement and a 3.0 tonne towing capacity.

The latter detail suggests that power will come from the 110kW 2.5 litre turbodiesel that will figure among the Colorado pickup's engine range.

The Colorado 7 should also give Holden a genuine competitor in rural markets.

Chevrolet's Trailblazer will debut at the Bangkok International Motor Show on March 28. Holden will release official Colorado 7 product information, specification and pricing details closer to launch - with timing still to be confirmed.
