Holden’s Sportwagon range in Australia will feature at least two models in 2018, with the local arrival of the Astra Sportwagon later this year.

Like the bigger Commodore Sportwagon, the Astra Sportwagon elongates the current Astra shape into a sleek wagon with the same tuning set-up for Australia as the Astra hatch.

To that end, the Astra Sportwagon will follow its hatch cousin to Australia as a Euro-sourced model (built in the UK), while the Astra Sedan will continue to be built in Korea.

Precise details are incomplete for now, but Holden says the Astra Sportwagon will feature 1600 litres of boot space, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with self-parking technology and autonomous emergency braking.

Power will come from the same 110kW/240Nm 1.4 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as the Astra R hatch, but a six-speed automatic will be the only transmission offered. In the hatch, the 1.4 litre engine uses 5.8 l/100km.

Other tech includes a stop-start fuel-saving system, lane-keep assist, powered tailgate, passive entry with push-button start, forward collision alert and a revering camera.

“With Astra Sportwagon joining Astra hatch and Astra sedan, we’re making sure there’s an exciting and desirable Holden small car to suit any taste or circumstance,” Holden’s Executive Sales Director, Michael Filazzola, said.

“Astra Sportwagon gives customers the best of all worlds with sleek, stylish design and impressive interior space, all supported by a wealth of driving and infotainment technology.”

Holden’s previous Astra model for Australia - the AH Astra in the mid 00s - was also available in wagon form, as was the Holden Cruze. But on the subject of the Cruze, the wagon and every other Cruze model is now gone from Holden’s local line-up with the nameplate retired (at least for now) upon the arrival of the Astra Sedan.

An Australian debut for the 2018 Holden Astra Sportwagon is scheduled for late this year. Stay tuned to TMR for more.
