Holden has revealed the three special edition models that will commemorate the end of local production for the rear-wheel drive Commodore, reviving iconic names for the past while celebrating Holden’s performance hisory.
All three models, the Motorsport Edition, Director, and Magnum ute will be fitted with the same 304kW 6.2 litre V8 already available in regular SS and Calais models. However, under the surface Holden engineers have reworked essential items to achieve General Motors “Level 3” track-use rating, putting them on par with top-level Corvette and Camaro models.
The Motorsport Edition is based on the Commodore SS-V Redline available with both a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic and features unique touches including Magnetic Ride Control suspension, a first for Holden, though the system has been previously available in HSV models and the Chevrolet SS. The Motorsport Edition also scores a high-rate rear subframe bushing, engine and transmission oil coolers and lightweight cross-drilled brake rotors with Brembo calipers.
On the outside the Motorsport Edition wears 20-inch split-forged alloy wheels finished in black with a red lip, a rear lip spoiler with optional rear wing, stripe package and Phantom black roof, while inside there’s new heated performance seats and “motorsport” embroidery on the dash.
Each of the 1200 Motorsport edition cars will feature an individually numbered ID plate displaying the unique KOM (for King of the Mountain) option code, as well as a commemorative presentation case and a Motorsport Edition 1:18 Biante scale model.
Dipping into Holden’s past and reviving the Director name, the 360 unit Calais V-based special edition also features Magnetic Ride Control, engine and transmission oil coolers coolers, lightweight cross-drilled brakes with Brembo calipers, 20-inch split-forged alloy wheels and heated Performance seats.
Other special touches include steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, heat extracting bonnet vents, a black grille, unique Director badging and interior embroidery, alloy pedals, rear lip spoiler, black roof and an individually numbered build plate showing the DIR option code and commemorative presentation case.
The rarest of the trio, the Magnum ute, also takes its name from Holden’s HDT past with just 240 units offered in a choice of manual or automatic. Unlike the sedans the SS-V Redline-based Magnum goes without Magnetic Ride Control instead running sedan-based FE3 fixed-rate suspension for improved handling and a lower ride height, albeit with a reduced payload.
Cross-drilled brakes as well as engine and transmission coolers have been installed to ensure track-readiness along with 20-inch wheels, performance seats, a hard tonneau cover, Magnum badging, decals and interior embroidery and a Magun rear window graphic.
A commemorate presentation case and individually-numbered build plaque displaying option code UTE are also part of the Magnum package.
Holden historians will note that unlike the original Magnum package, which was also applied to the Statesman and Caprice during the 1980s, Holden has bypassed the long-wheelbase Caprice and Caprice V for this round of special-edition cars.
Holden has also avoided the use of the term ‘final edition’ so as not to impact on the coming front- and all-wheel drive fully-imported Commodore, based on the Opel Insignia, set to arrive after local production ceases on the 20th of October 2017.
Buyers looking to secure a slice of Holden history may already be facing a bidding war amongst themselves with the special edition models already sold out just hours after being announced yesterday.
Holden also recognises the collector-potential for the new models offering a “no pre-delivery” option that will see cars delivered to owners primed to go straight into storage with all protective shipping plastic, suspension travel-chocks and factory-check stickers left in place.
