News out of Holden's Volt unveiling today is that its upcoming dedicated LPG Commodore range will rip the space-eating tank out of the boot. Instead, the LPG tank will be integrated into the body, beneath the rear of the car.

The change means we can likely expect to see the Commodore Sportwagon join the sedan when the new LPG range launches early next year.

The increased boot space in the sedan could also give Holden an edge over Ford's new Falcon EcoLPi, which is robbed of 71 litres of storage space if buyers want a spare tyre.

Details of the new LPG system have yet to be revealed, although it is expected to be offered only with Holden's locally-built 3.6 litre V6.

The system's dedicated LPG arrangement should also result in greater power than the current petrol-LPG engine, which produces 175kW and 318Nm of torque. By comparison, Ford's newer Falcon EcoLPi offers 198kW and 409Nm of torque.

Watch this space for more details as they become available.
