As with the HB-02 plug-in hybrid concept that preceded it, the HB-03 sticks with Haval’s plug-in system which pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor with an electric motor powered by a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack bringing official fuel consumption down to as little a 2.1 l/100km.
The all-in-one engine and motor unit can provide up to 200kW of power and 450Nm, or in Pure Electric mode the 95kW/278Nm electric motor can propel the HB-03 for up to 65 kilometres.
Haval suggest a 0-100 km/h sprint of around nine seconds with both petrol and electric power sources in use, a top speed of 210 km/h, and recharge time of four hours from a standard household electricity socket.
But it’s the HB-03's dramatic fastback form that grabbed the most attention in Shanghai, with a bold wheel-at-each-corner stance and slender glasshouse profile that owe more to Vehicles like the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe than any previous Haval product.
“The HB-03 combines clever hybrid technology together with the pure excitement of a real coupe. It’s very sporty, mature and full of muscle” Haval director of design, Pierre Leclercq, said.
“The vehicle features a lot of full surfaces as our form language. There are very sexy sheet metal movements and highly technical details that show the DNA direction for Haval.”
Leclercq should be no stranger to the form language of an SUV coupe either, having designed the first-generation BMW X6 during his time at BMW.
Haval has been just as bold with the interior of the HB-03 too, trimmed in black and orange, with carbon and black chrome highlights and a driver-centric infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and console-mounted rotary controller in the vein of BMW’s iDrive to simplify operation.
Despite its almost production-ready presentation Haval hasn’t yet indicated a production future for the HB-03, though its drivetrain technology is slated to make its way into Haval’s range soon.
