Great Wall's local subsidiary has announced that its upcoming Australian re-launch will be spearheaded by the Steed range of dual-cab utilities, known as the Wingle in its home market of China.

“In its home country, the Great Wall ute is called Wingle, which translates to ‘horse’," Great Wall Motors Australia Managing Director Parker Shi said.

"That’s why it has been called the Steed in the United Kingdom and why we have chosen that name.

“With its tough, rugged durability, we’re confident the Great Wall Steed will become a new best friend for many Australian farmers and tradesmen.”

Due to arrive in October this year, the Steed will be available in three versions: a 4x4 diesel, 4x2 diesel and 4x2 petrol. A dual-cab will be the only bodystyle offered, with stability control and six airbags to be standard equipment across the range.

Great Wall Motors Australia will officially take over the local sales and distribution of Great Wall vehicles on July 1 this year, and will share its headquarters with sister brand Haval in Melbourne's east.

Passenger-carrying SUVs will continue to be the domain of Haval, while Great Wall will no longer sell the X200 SUV and focus on the commercial vehicle market.

The company has also pledged continuing support to existing Great Wall owners and dealers.
