Great Wall has reportedly expressed a strong interest in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) Jeep arm, in a move that could see the American off-road brand switch to Chinese ownership.

Rumours of a then-unnamed Chinese buyer surfaced last week, but any deal was expected to include Chrysler, Dodge, RAM and Fiat - along with Jeep.

Representatives from FCA were said to have met with counterparts from Great Wall in China this month, but a statement from FCA denies any meeting took place.

However, Great Wall's public declaration that it is interested in the Jeep brand confirms the Chinese carmaker is at least keen to schedule a meeting.

Chinese authorities are said to be pushing for a greater expansion into overseas markets from its local carmakers, and Jeep could represent the 4WD, off-road enthusiast segment - a market not currently occupied by Chinese brands on any grand scale.
