GM's new compact crossover has two chances for an Australian debut: either as the already-revealed Opel Mokka, or as a new offering at the entry-level end of Holden's growing SUV line-up.

Adding credence to the second option is a new set of patent application renderings that have surfaced online this week.

While the little SUV has already been revealed in its North American form as the Buick Encore, these images show that a Chevrolet version is also in the works for international markets.

If a Holden debut for the Barina-sized crossover is on the cards, it is likely this Chevrolet design that will guide the look of the Australian model.

With a markedly different styling language and a significant divide in trim grades, Opel's Mokka could also sell in Australia alongside a Chevrolet-based Holden version.

While the Mokka would enter as a more affordable alternative to the BMW X1 and the MINI Countryman, Holden's crossover would tackle the Subaru XV, the Skoda Yeti and the upcoming Ford EcoSport.
