GM Confirms 2.0 Litre Turbo Engine For New Malibu

General Motors has confirmed that its all-new Malibu sedan will gain a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine late in 2012, joining the existing 2.5 litre Ecotec engine after launch in the US market.
Details on the new engine have yet to be revealed, although it is expected to be an all-new unit - possibly the same 200kW 2.0 litre turbo reportedly destined for duty in the new rear-wheel-drive Cadillac ATS.
Whether the engine will deliver the same power in the front-wheel-drive Malibu remains to be seen, although with the Hyundai Sonata (i45) Turbo offering similar figures in the US, GM will be keen to compete.
It is likely that the more powerful engine will come with a sports moniker tied on - the Malibu SS could return in the United States, although Holden-badged models could get the SRi-V badge worn by the top-shelf Cruze models.
In 2.5 litre Ecotec form, the Malibu will offer 140kW and 250Nm of torque - 25kW and 13Nm greater than the Epica sedan it will replace in Australia - with fuel consumption listed at 7.8 l/100km when paired with a six-speed automatic.
