GM And PSA Update Alliance Plans, Four New Joint Model Projects Coming

General Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroen have announced plans for four new joint vehicle projects as part of a new alliance announced earlier this year.

These projects involve GM’s Opel and Vauxhall European brands, and French giant PSA’s Citroen and Peugeot marques.

The projects are set to result in a small MPV for Opel/Vauxhall that will also form the basis of a crossover/SUV for Peugeot, and a light MPV for Opel/Vauxhall and Citroen. 

Also, the upgrade of an existing small car platform and a new mid-size platform are set to spawn models for all brands involved.

As announced previously, the first of these models is expected to be launched by late 2016.

The two automotive giants also plan to capitalise on their combined purchasing power, with this synergy and the joint vehicle projects expected to deliver combined savings of US$2 billion (AU$1.93 billion) annually within the next five years.

Further integration options are being explored, though this most recent announcement appears to dispel previous whispers of a wholesale merger of Opel and Peugeot.
