Italian design house Giugiaro is known for some of the automotive world's most elegant designs, but the jury's out on its latest effort.

Dubbed the Clipper, Giugiaro's new concept takes Volkswagen's versatle MQB platform and plonks a six-seat MPV body on top. The end result looks much like an overgrown Golf 7.

Designed to be a vision of how large families will get around in the near future, the Clipper features a 2+2+2 seating arrangement and is powered by a pair of electric motors, one on both the front and rear axles.

Each motor produces up to 110kW of power, and there's enough energy storage aboard for a 540km range.

But the Clipper's most interesting features by far are its doors. The front pivot up and forward like a McLaren P1, while the rears are hung gullwing style.

The door opening is huge as a consequence, and the roof and B-pillar are no longer obstructions to passenger entry.

The rear seats - as you can see - don't look especially easy to get into, but the Clipper's compact proportions suggest space may be at a premium there anyway.

Does it matter though? Not at all. The Clipper is strictly a design study, with no plans for Giugiaro or VW to put it into production.
