NEW FORD FALCON: SYDNEY MOTOR SHOW 2012

Ford Australia has committed to keeping the Falcon name alive, with CEO Bob Graziano announcing to the media that a new Falcon will arrive in 2014.

Graziano described it as the “All-Australian Falcon” in his presentation, however specifications have yet to be clarified and a more detailed announcement is expected next year.

And, while the commitment to keeping the Falcon means the iconic badge won't be disappearing from our roads anytime soon, there's still a cloud hanging over the future of Ford's local vehicle production capability.

Whether the Falcon name survives beyond 2016, when local Falcon and Territory production is speculated to shut down, is another matter. Under Ford's "One Ford" plan, all global markets will eventually share common platforms, drivetrains and vehicles.

Market-specific models like the Falcon won't survive unless its platform has applications in other Ford markets. A far more likely global large car for Ford is the next-generation Taurus.

Still, Bob Graziano remains enthusiastic for the local product.

“We're really excited about Falcon and what it represents to our portfolio,” he said.

“We think that given the recent announcement on investment in January we think it's important that we show people where we're headed with Falcon.

“It's a terrific product, and we're really looking forward to having that vehicle in Australia in 2014.”
