2012 FORD FOCUS ST

Ford is planning not one, not two, not three but four world-firsts for next month's Frankfurt Motor Show - but what exactly the blue oval camp will unveil, it's not saying.

Well, that's not entirely true. Ford revealed today that Frankfurt will play host to the next-generation performance Focus, likely to be the long-awaited flagship Focus ST.

For the Australian market, it remains unclear if the new model will be dubbed XR4 Turbo (the five-cylinder heart is long gone), or inherit the European-market ST name.

Recent reports however suggest that Ford Australia will adopt the European-market ST name for the local model.

Ford will also unveil a new design concept at the German event, although details for that one are thin on the ground.

The two remaining unveilings are likely to include the production version of the Vertrek compact SUV concept revealed earlier this year (shown above).

Replacing the European-market Kuga, the Vertrek is unlikely to make the trek to the Australian market.

We might also expect to see the top-shelf Fiesta ST make its production debut, with spy photos in the past year revealing that a camouflaged and modified Fiesta has been doing the rounds at the Nurburgring.

Reports in 2009 suggested the Fiesta ST had been shelved until 2012, so a debut in Frankfurt next month could be on the cards.
