A survey of 1000 Australians, commissioned by Ford, has revealed a spike in the number of travellers looking to local destinations for their next family trip.

Over the last three years, the number of Aussies planning a domestic holiday has risen from 32 to 48 percent.

While the weakening Australian Dollar will no doubt be a factor in determining travel destinations, lower fuel prices are also having an impact - the study found 54 percent of travellers were prepared to drive up to 1000km from where they live to reach a holiday destination.

A shift in holidaying habits also brings a shift in priorities for family car purchases, with respondents reporting a greater focus on long-distance ability.

Safety was the top priority for 42 percent of respondents with children, rising to 47 percent for those with children aged under five years.

Reliability was the most crucial factor for 37 percent, while just 15 percent were focussed on storage capacity.

And the chosen new car for family road trips according to 67 percent of those surveyed? An SUV of course…
