Ford Says Focus The Best Selling Car In 2012, Toyota Begs To Differ

Ford’s Focus small car is the world's best-selling car in the first half of 2012, according to figures collected by independent market information analysts, IHS.

The Focus is currently sold in over 100 countries, notching up a total 489,616 sales for the period.

Trumpeting the sales success of the new third-generation model, these figures, according to Ford, bump the Focus’ nearest competitor, Toyota's Corolla, into second spot. The Corolla badge accounted for 462,187 sales over the same period.

Toyota disputes this claim however, arguing that Ford’s boast ignores the other badges the Corolla is sold under across international markets.

These include the European-market Auris, which is responsible for nearly 50,000 sales over the period.

By this measure, the Corolla has racked up 603,840 sales, well ahead of anything wearing a Focus body or badge.

Nonetheless, despite the bun-fight, Focus is Ford's best selling nameplate - and 2012 is shaping up to be its best year yet. A final 2011 tally of 860,000 currently looks easily within reach.

Ford’s claim comes in the same week it produced its 350 millionth vehicle - naturally a Focus - giving the company who pioneered mass production an average of 3.2 million cars per year over its 109 year history.

Australia

The Focus story is slightly different on the Australian market, currently ranking fifth in the highly competitive (and largest) small car segment.

A figure of 10,092 units (to July 31) is dwarfed by the category leading Mazda3 with 25,168 units over the same period.

Toyota’s Corolla is not far behind, at 22,011 sales, with the Holden Cruze (18,312) and Hyundai i30 (16,045) also ahead of Focus.

Local Focus sales are on the rise though, the new 2012 model has achieved a 38 percent increase in sales over the same period in 2011.
