In early August, Ford confirmed that it will unveil the production version of its next-generation Focus ST at Frankfurt next month, inspired by the blazing orange concept shown in Paris last year.

Appearing alongside the new five-door Focus ST in Frankfurt will be an all-new concept. Ford is keeping mum on the details, but new reports suggest that a rival for Volkswagen's low-slung Scirocco is waiting in the wings.

According to American enthusiast blog CarScoop, insiders at Ford have confirmed a sporty new three-door coupe concept will preview an eventual production model, and offer a glimpse at the company's future styling language.

Adding credence to the report is confirmation late last year that, unlike its predecessor, there are no plans for a three-door version of the regular Focus hatch.

The move to a more purpose-driven design is quickly becoming a trend: in Australia, the three-door Volkswagen Golf R has been dropped to accommodate the upcoming Scirocco.

Germany's GM-owned Opel has also revealed a much sharper Astra three-door that shares next-to no sheetmetail with the regular five-door model.

Expect the new concept to utilise a version of the Focus' existing front-wheel-drive platform, with power coming - at least in concept form - from the ST's turbocharged 184kW 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine.
