Ford has used the Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil its latest performance-oriented model, this time based on the Mondeo.

But if you were waiting for a fire-breathing mid-sizer the news isn’t great.

While the Mondeo's American cousin, the Fusion Sport is available with a twin turbo V6 good for 242kW of power and 475Nm of torque, delivered via an all wheel drive system, the Mondeo 'ST Line' doesn't push the performance envelope quite so far.

Instead the Mondeo 'ST Line' will be made available across the existing Mondeo engine range, and like the Fiesta ST Line and Focus ST Line variants revealed earlier this year, the Mondeo concentrates more on sporty looks than outright performance.

Unlike the Fiesta and Focus however, the Mondeo doesn’t have a fully-fledged ST model to take its cues from (at least not yet) but that hasn’t stopped it from following the same style guide.

The ST Line wears a honeycomb upper and lower grille, front lip spoiler, LED daytime running lamps, and new rectangular foglamps up front. Window mouldings are given the blackout treatment, joined by sports sills, and the rear bumper gets a unique look, with a black diffuser and silver tailpipe surrounds.

“The new Mondeo ST-Line is our sportiest Mondeo since we introduced the Mondeo ST220 model in 2002,” according to Ford Europe’s vice president of marketing, Roelant de Waard

“Mondeo ST-Line adds another dimension to the broad Mondeo line-up.”

Inside the ST Line is trimmed with cloth or partial leather sports seats featuring red stitching, a perforated leather steering wheel, sports gearknob on manual models, and ST Line scuff plates.

Handling improvements come courtesy of sports-tuned suspension, with a choice of 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels to complete the package.

European buyers will be offered the ST line with a choice of 117kW 1.5 litre and 150kW 2.0 litre turbo petrol engines, or 110kW, 132kW, or 155kW 2.0 litre turbo diesel engines.

TMR has contacted Ford Australia regarding the availability of the Mondeo ST Line in Australia and will update this article with the response.
