Ford’s GT supercar, last seen on a production schedule in 2006, could return sometime in 2016 if new reports out of the US are to be believed.

Rumours of a new GT have been circulating since before the last one finished up, but 2016 marks an important milestone: 50 years since the first of Ford’s four consecutive wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It will also be 10 years since the ‘first’ GT left production (its famous racing predecessor being known properly, of course, as the ‘GT40’) and, according to US mag Road & Track, this will all come together in the form of a new model.

It is believed that Ford is keen to launch a new Le Mans assault, taking on racers like the Ferrari 458, Porsche 911 and countryman the Corvette in the 2016 GTE class.
