One of the new Mustang's party tricks is that it allows drivers to lock the front brakes independently of the rears. Why? Burnouts, that's why.
The system is called a line-locker, and it's something that drag racers use to warm up their rear tyres before making a pass down the quarter mile.
The fact that a line-locker is a standard feature on the new Mustang is pretty cool if you're a car enthusiast, but it appears that if you use it for its intended purpose - drag racing - Ford will void your warranty.
US site Motor Authority noticed a small message at the bottom of Ford's PR video for the line-lock feature saying, "Racing your vehicle will void your warranty". After approaching Ford USA for clarification, it appears that Ford will indeed cut up your Mustang's warranty card if you line it up against another car at a drag strip or racetrack.
But happily, your warranty will remain intact as long as the car isn't used in competition. Blasting down a quarter mile by yourself with no official timing? That's fine. Feel engaging the line-lockers and doing a gigantic burnout in your own driveway? Ford doesn't mind that either.
Keep in mind though that the above only applies to Mustangs sold in the USA. With the new Mustang not expected to go on sale here until late 2015, we don't expect full clarity on the warranty situation until then.
