Ford has made good on its promise that the new Focus RS will deliver “well in excess of 235kW”, today confirming final numbers of 257kW and 440Nm.

Those figures will make the 2.3 litre four-cylinder turbo engine's application in the new RS markedly more powerful than with the new Mustang, where it produces a comparatively meagre 232kW and 432Nm.

The new all-wheel-drive RS will also comfortably eclipse the 224kW offered with the previous front-wheel-drive, five-cylinder turbocharged RS.

And although that retired warrior can at least boast of matching its successor's base torque figure, the new RS also gains a 15-second 'transient overboost' function that boosts torque to 470Nm.
