Ford's new 1.0 litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine has made its production debut this week, replacing the 1.6 litre Duratec engine in the UK-market Focus range.

Revealed early last year, the new engine is the third in the carmaker's ultra-green EcoBoost range, following the existing 2.0 litre four-cylinder and 3.5 litre V6 engines.

In the Focus, the new turbocharged engine will be offered in two states of tune, one producing 75kW and the other delivering 92kW and 170Nm of torque. There is also an 'overboost' function which temporarily pushes torque to 200Nm.

Fuel consumption is listed at 4.8 and 5.0 l/100km respectively.

By comparison, the 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated Duratec delivers 92kW and 159Nm of torque. The big change is in fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100km in manual form and 6.6 l/100km for the auto.

For the current Australian range and in the scope of the local market, that's a good return - but it's nicely topped by the new mill.

"This is the third addition to our acclaimed EcoBoost engine family, signaling a new era of downsized, super frugal engines for the sub-130PS (96kW) segment," Graham Hoare, Ford's European Executive Powertrain Director said.



For now, the 1.0 litre engine's place in the Focus line-up has been confirmed for the UK market only. However, with Ford's global "One Ford" plan guiding the way, we could eventually see the more efficient engine in the local Focus.

Speaking with TMR today, Ford Australia's Public Affairs Director Sinead Phipps said that for now, it is unclear if the local Focus will get the new engine.

"There's no word at this stage. Our Focus production moves to Thailand in the middle of this year, so we'll be taking Thai-spec vehicles," Ms Phipps said.

"The 1.0 litre EcoBoost will first be seen here, mostly likely, in the EcoSport when that comes."

The EcoSport crossover, based on the same platform that underpins the Fiesta, was earlier this year. Ford has confirmed a 2013 Australian debut.
