Ford Focus Crowned World’s Best-Selling Vehicle Of 2012, Toyota Cries Foul

Ford's first truly global car, the Focus, has been declared the world's most popular nameplate of 2012 by R.L. Polk & Co. With over 1.02 million Focuses (Focii?) sold last year, the Focus has proven popular with buyers around the world

Ford's first truly global car, the Focus, has been declared the world's most popular nameplate of 2012 by R.L. Polk & Co.

With over 1.02 million Focuses (Focii?) sold last year, the Focus has proven popular with buyers around the world - but now Toyota has called Polk's data into question.

According to Polk, Toyota shipped only 872,774 Corollas in 2012. Toyota US' Mike Michels says this isn't so, with the Japanese carmaker's own data indicating 1.16 million Corollas were sold last year.

So why are Polk's Corolla numbers out by around 300,000 units?

It could be because the Corolla is sold under different nameplates in different regions.

It wears the Auris badge for the Japanese and European market hatchback, Corolla Axio for the East Asian market sedan, and Corolla Altis for sedans sold in Malaysia and Indonesia - while the Focus is a Focus no matter where you go.

In Australia at least, the Corolla still enjoys a comfortable lead on the Focus. Last year Toyota Australia racked up 38,799 Corolla sales, while Ford only moved 18,586 Focus models from its showrooms.

Toyota has requested Polk clarify its figures.
