Ford could be planning some iconic special editions of its performance Falcon models as the nameplate enters its final 18 months of production.
A recent trademark registration suggests the XR6, XR6 Turbo and XR8 models will see the return of the Sprint badge sometime between now and the end of 2016 when the Falcon range is retired.
Adding limited edition models to the XR6 and XR8 line-ups makes sense: while Falcon sales have hit a historic low, the performance variants have bucked the trend to the point where Ford doubled production of the XR8.
But, with Ford still to confirm plans for the Sprint badge, the carmaker might simply be reserving the names to keep its options open.
Also unclear is whether future Falcon Sprint models will offer performance improvements over the regular XR offerings, or if they will simply add the likes of new alloy wheels and some stripes or badging to the existing package.
