Ford Australia has issued a recall for its EcoSport compact SUV for a potentially dangerous manufacturing fault that could see the rear axle separate from the vehicle while driving.

The issue affects all EcoSports built between November 29 2013 through to April 11 2014, and concerns the two pivot bolts that secure the rear torsion beam axle to the chassis.

According to Ford, those bolts may not have been tightened to the correct torque at the factory, and may work loose over time. If one or both of those bolts come loose while the car is at speed, an abrupt loss of control may result.

Owners of affected vehicles can expect to be contacted by Ford in the near future, with the company advising that cars should be driven "with caution and at moderate speed".

Concerned owners can contact Ford's customer care line on 1800 503 672 for further details.
