The first official trailer for director Ron Howard's upcoming film Rush has hit the internet today, offering a first look at the big-budget Niki Lauda biopic.

The film stars Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) as the hard-nosed Niki Lauda, joined by Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as McLaren's playboy F1 driver James Hunt.

The story focuses on the titanic battle between Hunt and Lauda in the 1976 Formula One World Championship. Director Ron Howard's famous attention to detail is evident in the period-perfect accuracy seen in this trailer.

Shot on location in Germany, Austria and the UK, the film also stars a number of genuine race cars from the period.

There's also no shortage of gratuitous crashes and sex scenes - but what's a good box-office smash without a little (or a lot...) of both?

Based on true events that include Lauda's horrific brush with a fiery death and his return to challenge for the title again, Rush was penned by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan.

Rush will hit our screens in September.
