Fiat is reportedly preparing a high-riding crossover version of its new five-door 500L hatch, growing the 500 family to five models, and a Jeep version could also be in the works.

According to industry paper Automotive News Europe, an unnamed Fiat insider has confirmed that the new model, dubbed 500X, will debut early next year before entering production later in 2013.

The paper reports that the 500X will stretch to just under 4200mm, making it around 60mm longer than the current 500L.

Expect the 500X to bring the usual catalogue of crossover add-ons, including raised suspension, black plastic bumpers and stick-on guard covers.

The arrival of the new model is expected to replace the Suzuki SX4-based Sedici, which hit the European market in 2006 and gained a more Fiat-specific facelift in 2009.

While the Sedici is built alongside the SX4 at Suzuki's factory in Hungary, the 500X is expected to be produced at Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy - the first of the current 500 family to be built in the brand's homeland.

Jeep will also get a new small crossover out of the deal, the report claims.

The new car, codenamed "B-SUV" will enter beneath the Compass and Patriot cars (or their replacements), with a debut expected in the first half of 2014.

Plans for a small Jeep crossover were confirmed last year by Fiat and Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne, listing the B-SUV among three new SUVs planned to debut around 2013.
