Fiat Australia has confirmed that it will add an SUV to its range in the coming months, ahead of the inbound Punto and Panda light cars.
Scheduled for an April debut, the Fiat Freemont will be pitched as an SUV, despite it being based on the Dodge Journey people mover.
The Journey, meanwhile, will continue to be sold until stocks run out around the middle of this year, by which point the Freemont will take its place.
The Freemont’s spec list reads much like the Journey’s. It will feature space for up to seven people (although a five-seater may be offered as an entry-level model), and most likely offer two engines - one diesel and one petrol.
In Europe, the Freemont is available with a 2.4 litre petrol inline four with 129kW and 225Nm, or a 2.0 litre turbodiesel four with 125kW and 350Nm. A 3.6 litre petrol V6 is also available in the European flagship Lounge model, producing 208kW and 353Nm.
Precise details about equipment levels and pricing will be released closer to the Freemont’s April launch.
