Fiat has announced a special new 50th anniversary edition of its tiny 500 hatch, revealing a new version of its Abarth ‘595’.
Billed as the quickest 595 model yet, the new special will soon make its way to Australia, limited to 50 units and priced from $45,000.
That’s a $10,000 premium over the Abarth 500 Esseesse, but it’s also a good deal more powerful. Add in the limited-edition factor, and we can expect this new special to easily sell its Aussie allocation.
Power in the Abarth 595 50th Anniversary comes from the familiar turbocharged 1.4 litre four-cylinder engine, but output is boosted to 132kW and 250Nm - up from 118kW and 201Nm.
The extra ‘go’ comes courtesy of an overboost function activated via a Sport button, giving the perky little Italian the same power as Volkswagen’s Polo GTI (for now), while weighing around 150kg less.
The only transmission on offer is Fiat’s five-speed roboticised manual (with shift paddles), but the company promises a relatively swift 0-100km/h run of “less than seven seconds”. Top speed is listed at 225km/h.
In Esseesse form, with a five-speed manual (tested twice now by TMR), the little Abarth rocket is a mite slower at 7.4 seconds.
There’s also a Torque Transfer Control traction system to get power to the front axle, and there’s red-lined 17-inch alloys at all four corners.
Standard tricks include xenon headlights, fog lights, a sun roof, leather sports seats (red-and-white combination only), leather sports steering heel, climate control and the Blue&Me connectivity system.
All of the 595 specials will also get a 50th anniversary ‘595’ vintage-styled car cover, a pair of limited-edition sunglasses and a Tramontaro luggage set.
