The Fiat 500 BEV electric vehicle concept is reportedly set for a US-market debut this year, following the North American sales launch of the regular 500 last year.

Whispers of a production model come after a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing surfaced this week, outlining plans for a 2012 launch.

Revealed as a concept at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, the 500 BEV was designed to investigate the application of Chrysler's modular electric drive technology in a smaller package.

The Italian-American partnership revealed little else about the Fiat 500 BEV at the time, and two years on, the story remains unchanged.

Past reports suggest the electric 500 will take 10 hours to gain a full charge from a regular home power supply, while dedicated charging stations will accomplish the task in half the time.

Drag-reducing aerodynamic updates to the 500's exterior were expected, but short of the missing tail pipes up back, the 500 BEV's exterior appears little different to the more powerful 500 Abarth.

The SEC filing offered no technical details, confirming only that the car will comply with "federal greenhouse gas, or CHG, and California ZEV requirements".

If the 500 BEV is indeed locked in for a 2012 launch, an unveiling at next month's New York Auto Show is likely.
