Fiat’s funky 500 is turning 500 - or so it would seem, but it might surprise you to learn that the iconic city car is only 60 years old.
In fact, Fiat refers to the 500 as being “forever young”.
And like any spritely young thing celebrating a major birthday milestone, Fiat has decided to let its hair down with a retro-themed party.
Not that the 500 didn’t already dress in costume from the 50s, as the model was born in Turin, Italy on 4 July 1957, but now customers can step-up the retro theme even more with the limited edition Fiat 500 Anniversario.
Based on the 500 Lounge, the Anniversario brings vintage logos, chrome plating and “full” 16-inch rims.
To complement the look, three exclusive paint finishes are available: Riviera Green, Sicilia Orange and Gelato White.
Inside, there’s new seat fabric, coloured dash inserts, Anniversario floor mats and - to prove the 500 is indeed still young - a Uconnect five-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation.
Power comes from a 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which in the 500 Lounge, makes 51kW and 102Nm.
“The Fiat 500 Anniversario Edition offers a glimpse into the iconic heritage of the Fiat brand and pays tribute to the vehicle which launched 60 years ago,” Fiat Australia boss Fulvio Antonelli said.
“The Anniversario is a modern Italian-made hatchback that represents a reworking of the vehicle’s unmistakable design signature.”
The 2017 Fiat 500 Anniversario is on sale locally from October, but Australia’s allocation has been limited to just 60 units (one for each year of the 500’s existence). Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
