Forget May’s exclusivity-focused business plan, Ferrari is now planning a significant boost in production volume to rake in more sales than ever.

Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is wasting no time in his new role as Ferrari chairman, after a clash over the brand’s direction saw its long-time leader Luca di Montezemolo resign this week.

The change in direction is expected to call for a new goal of 10,000 sales per year, compared to a more modest 7000.

That smaller figure was confirmed in May as part of a push to maintain the Ferrari brand’s exclusivity - essentially a plan to keep values high and, perhaps, to ensure that not every Thomas, Richard and Harold III could have one.

Marchionne’s new plan is not entirely unexpected, however, with Ferrari earlier confirming that the potential existed to push production to 10,000 per year “as population of high net-worth buyers grows in emerging and non-traditional markets”.

Speaking with press in Italy today, Marchionne said "If that class increases, we should be able to follow them. [Otherwise] the waiting list will become too long, and people get tired.”
