Outgoing Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, speaking with media this week in his final briefing, has confirmed the carmaker will not expand into the premium sedan and SUV market.

Sitting alongside Sergio Marchionne - his boss at Fiat and, from October 13, his replacement as head of Ferrari - di Montezemolo spoke candidly of the superbrand’s future.

"Marchionne wanted to build a truck but I talked him out of it," the flamboyant Italian joked with the UK’s Autocar at the event.

"Ferrari will continue to make two-door sports cars, not SUVs or four-door cars."

At the same event, Marchionne dismissed earlier reports that he would work to push Ferrari volume well beyond the company’s planned target of 7000 sales annually.

In September, reports out of Europe suggested Marchionne would seek not only to boost annual Ferrari sales to 10,000 units, but also to integrate the legendary brand more tightly with the wider Fiat Chrysler group.

Marchionne ruled out any such plans to tie Ferrari closer to Fiat, telling press that “the mixing of their blood would be fatal to both”.

For now, Marchionne says he is focused on returning Scuderia Ferrari to Formula 1 prominence, describing this as a “non-negotiable objective”.

News through the week that Red Bull driver and four-time series champion Sebastian Vettel will move to Ferrari in 2015 could go a long way to securing Marchionne’s goal.
