The turbocharged V8 engine with direct injection, currently powering the Maserati Quattroporte, finds its way into the California.
Ferrari has tweaked the V8 for the California to make 412kW and 755Nm, thanks in part to an increased capacity, up from 3.8 to 3.9 litres.
That marks a sizable increase over the outgoing model’s 360Kw and 505Nm from its 4.3 litre naturally-aspirated V8, with power up 52kW and torque improving by 250Nm.
The 2014 California is 0.2 seconds faster than the outgoing model over the 0-100km/h sprint with a time of 3.6 seconds, and top speed climbs from 312km/h to 316km/h.
When fitted with the 'HELE' fuel-saving technology, fuel consumption improves 15 percent over the previous model to 10.5 l/100km, with emissions down 20 percent.
Other improvement to the California T include a revised chassis, improved steering response and the latest version of Ferrari’s F1-Trac traction control system.
There’s new springs all round, plus the latest-generation 'Magnaride' dampers, which Ferrari says respond 50 percent faster.
Inside, the new California gets an updated dash layout, featuring a semi-electronic instrument cluster and a 6.5-inch touch screen.
Ferrari assures fans that its trademark engine note will not be affected by the adoption of a turbocharger, saying the sound "becomes even more potent as engine speed increases".
The 2014 Ferrari California T will make its debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, before arriving in overseas showrooms later in the year.
